positive conmanship

i've been canvassing door to door
for about two weeks, now

i do it because its positive conmanship,
on some days--before the door even opens
i relish the fact that people need to be conned
to do whats good for them

like i'm the dad turning the brocolli
on the fork
into the choo-choo train

i look them in their eyes
and watch their horrific reflex
when i ask for money

'well, it takes money to beat big oil,
sir, ma'am, angry dog, self'

i used to be on the other end
and i just wanted to sign the petition, too

i'll just be blunt and say we are dumb
and docile
and short sighted

and that it's hard to care
and i only understand, to a point, now,
to a degree, but i can't help but feel

we don't want know what's really going on
past our comfort sphere of stuff and shit

and then theres me
with that t-shirt
with that smile
telling you that we shouldn't need oil anymore

and i know you like your stuff and your shit
but, honestly, that's going to cost you a lot more
than you not giving a shit

people are working a dollar a day
getting us all the shit we happily consume
having their homes that they had for countless years
destroyed
for we can drive

and i know realizing this changes everything
but that's a good thing

it's a good thing to care
and fight valiant fights

it's fun.

and i know asking for money to join an organization
dedicated to preserving the environment,
looking to end our oil addiction

goes against your immediate needs

but let's be real

we're all responsible for this

this is all of our fault

get it straight
the world never needed our saving
we need our saving

we are parasitic to the planet
and beyond that,
our selves

so i'll gladly you con you
out of your money
so that lobbyists can con
politicians into doing whats good

for 99.99% of the population
rather than that small demographic
that manages to get 28 billion dollars a year
digging big holes in other peoples backyards

but i'll just be blunt and say we are dumb
and docile
and short sighted

until further notice
